Judgments of both parenting problems and maternal coping were made during a home visit when the infant was 3 wks old. Parents completed such measures as the Dyadic Adjustment Scale and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). Four categories of respiratory status were defined: asthma; recurrent infectious wheezing; a single isolated wheezing episode; or no wheezing.
