Resumen:	Reviews Freud's (1920) concept of the protective shield against stimuli in light of those recent studies of infant behavior that have demonstrated a high degree of sensory receptiveness in the newborn. This stimulus barrier concept is placed in a modern framework, and its relevance to current views of early development is assessed.
